The village of Skandalo appeared in the nineteenth century as a natural settlement consisting of several neighbourhoods, scattered around the mountains. Now about 60-70 people live in the village constantly. The name Skandalo comes from the Greek word skandalon which means anger, rage, loop, seduction, temptation. It has to do with the raging waterfall nearby.
Skandalo was the first electrified village in the area. A combing machine, a mill, a sawmill and a dynamo machine were all constructed on a stakeholder basis. The traditional means of living were farming, fruit-growing, timber industry and pottery.
Typical for the region were meat dishes – lamb, pork, game – and the most widely-spread drink was the Troyan plum rakia.
The church holiday of the village is St Archangel Michael’s Day. And on the first Saturday after the holiday the village fair takes place when 200-250 people come from all around the area to celebrate together.
The Skandaloto-1896 family hotel is a renovated building from the Bulgarian National Revival period dating back to the end of the nineteenth century. Its original architecture has been preserved using natural materials like stone and wood. Part of the house was a tailor’s which has now been reconstructed into a tavern with 30 seats and the cowshed and the barn were turned into sleeping premises. There is a lovely inner garden perfect for taking a siesta or having your meals in the summer time.
The hotel is situated in a picturesque area. You will find the Vidima river winding just in front of it. Those of our guests who enjoy authentic experience, as well as rural and ecological tourism, will discover pieces of fascinating nature, the joy of the long-forgotten dip in a river pool, incredible silence and tranquility. The peace and quiet in the hotel, the healthy climate of the mountain could bring about some truly relaxing experience for your family.
There are two balconies, typical of the Revival period, suitable for quiet games and a relaxing break.
Those who do not really fancy long walks and trekking are more than welcome to enjoy the fresh air and the sun in the garden of our hotel.
Each rooms has local heating and a bathroom as well as cable TV.
